Actual news from our weekend excursions will come tomorrow when we have more time to write, but for now, a little story.
ODDITY #2: A 4-HOUR WASH CYCLE?
So, being that we packed lightly for our treks abroad, our clothes were ready to be introduced to our wash machine after several days of wear. But, imagine reading a dial of Spanish instructions and multiple “foreign” buttons to push. It was rather intimidating to try. Fortunately, we are blessed with the help of folks at our Spanish school if we run into trouble, so, kind Juan (who speaks very little English) accompanied us home from school to give us guidance. Although we didn’t comprehend every word he spoke, we felt pretty confident that we understood what buttons to push and what cycle to select. Thus, we began our first cycle and went out for a walk. 1 ½ Hours later, the wash machine was still going. We were puzzled… “The clothes must be getting very clean,” we thought. So, we cooked our dinner above the machine (since it is located just to the right of our sink), and following dinner dried our dishes on top of the spin cycle. It was still going. Two hours later, the 18 CYCLES (yes, 18!) seemed to be completed, but the red light was not going off. The door would not unlatch either. Now our puzzlement moved to frustration. “What wash machine takes 4 hours?” So picture Travis, (who has a tainted history of becoming rather frustrated with in adamant objects not functioning properly) gazing into the wash machine at his clothes, tugging on the door, and shouting, “I want my clothes back!” It was quite a scene. We finally gave up and went to bed. Fortunately in the morning, the door unlatched and the clothes came out. Can’t say they looked cleaner than any other day, but hey, at least we got them back! Travis was relieved.
I’ve got load #2 in tonight set on a different cycle this time, so we’ll see what happens. We’ve also learned to hang dry our entire load. There are no dryers in this city… thus, the famous clotheslines hang off all the terraces and balconies. It makes for pretty photographs… but some pretty stiff-dried clothes! Time to invest in fabric softener. -Trish

Excursion to Toledo
The Toldeo Cathedral
....supposedly one of the most beautiful in all of Europe
The city (the former capital of Spain) is on top of a hill, surrounded by a stone wall
the narrow city streets were an adventure to walk on
lovely city streets...
The top of a mosque
The "Bullet Train"
This high speed train runs over 200 miles an hour! We traveled a distance of 100 miles in 30 minutes flat. Amazing.
Excited for our first trip outside of Madrid
Another typical plaza in the center of the city. As usual, late in the day all the folks gather together and sit and catch up on their days. Very pleasant!
I loved watching this sweet elderly man pacing the square. Looks like he might have benefited from drinking more milk though in his younger days!
Our first "Menu of the Dia." This is my 1st course of their famous gaspacho- served more pureed and smooth here than how we make it in CA...
a view from on top of the city
love the flowers and shadows
The Packing Nightmare!
We actually lived amongst this for several days!

Your story about the wash made me laugh out loud! And I'd love to see a picture of your clothes hanging in the wind ;) Have a great week!
Thank you all for reading about our journeys! It's great to share with all of you. As far as "the restaurant that serves pig..." I'm not sure which one you're referring to, but don't they ALL serve pig?!!! It's everywhere! We'll tell you more about Toldeo tonight, and I'm editing the pictures now. We're still working on getting Skype up and running. Our internet connection isn't always good, so it's been difficult to have enough time to set up our connection. Our plan is to take care of that tomorrow.
Hello again,
I love reading your stories. You are learning so much. You should be able to go on Jeaopardy when you get back. Grandpa is working full tim for Stan lately. I am seeing doctors and chiropractors still. Today I joined CURVES! I want to fit in the dress I wore at your wedding for Chase and Holly's weddings in October. Love, GrandmaB
